The Chinese contemporary art market, all but nonexistent before 1989, has become a powerhouse industry and produced a pantheon of multimillionaire artist-celebrities. However, women in that pantheon remain absent. If any woman qualifies as a power artist on the current male model, it is Lin Tianmiao. Like many artists of her generation, she was raised during the Cultural Revolution but developed professionally in its rocky aftermath.
